    4 APPLICATION

It is widely used in the manufacture of components on aeroengines and industrial gas turbines, such as turbine blade, afterburner, fasteners, etc., and also widely used in automobile engines, also used as high-temperature bearing parts of aeroengines, such as turbine discs, which are under 650℃ for long-term operation.

Alloy A-286 is also very popular in offshore oil and gas industry where high levels of heat and stress are a factor. The alloy can produce deformation products of various shapes, such as disc, forging, plate, bar, wire and ring, etc.

It is also used for fastener applications in automotive engine and manifold components subject to high levels of heat and stress and in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Superior Alloy A-286 is developed on the basis of Alloy A-286. As long as the purity of alloy is improved, gas content is limited, low melting point element content is controlled, and heat treatment system is adjusted, the thermal strength and long-term performance of alloy can be improved.

    8 CORROSION RESISTANCE

Alloy A-286 has corrosion resistance similar to austenitic stainless steels in many environments. It has superior corrosion resistance to nickel-base alloys when exposed to sulfur contaminated atmospheres at elevated temperatures. The corrosion resistance of this alloy is excellent up to 1300 °F(704 °C) against many atmospheres encountered in jet engine service. Up to 1800 °F(982 °C), the oxidation resistance of alloy A-286 is equivalent to that of 310 Stainless Steel.

    9 WORKING INSTRUCTION

    Hot working

Alloy A-286 has similar hot working properties as compared to austenitic stainless steels. It is rolled or forged from temperatures of 1900/2050°F (1038/1121°C) using a short soaking period. It is slightly more resistant to deformation than the austenitic stainless steels during hot working. Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C). 15–20% minimum reduction should be combined with a low finishing temperature to produce a fine, uniform grain size. The formability of Alloy A-286 in the solution annealed condition is similar to Type 310 stainless steel.

    Cold working

In the solution treated condition, Alloy A-286 can be satisfactorily cold drawn and formed. It is somewhat stiffer than stainless steels such as Types 316 and 310, and it work hardens rapidly.

    Machinability

Being an austenitic Stainless Steel with 24% nickel content, Alloy A-286 is an iron-base alloy which is easier to machine as compared to nickel-based precipitation-hardening steels.

The machinability of Alloy A-286 is similar to that of the austenitic stainless steels specifically stainless steel type 310. Alloy A-286 is usually machined in the full aged or partially aged condition.

Carbide insert tools are commonly used for machining Alloy A-286.

In general, the high temperature alloys are more difficult to machine than stainless steels. However, the iron-base alloy group, of which Alloy A-286 is a member, is easier to machine than the nickel-base precipitation-hardening grades such as Alloy 718 or cobalt-bearing grades such as Alloy 41. Carbide insert tools are commonly used where possible.

    10 HEAT TREATMENT

    Solution treatment

Two methods of heat treatment are suggested for this alloy:

    (1) Heat to 1800°F (982°C), hold 1 hour at heat, then cool rapidly.

    (2) Heat to 1650°F (899°C), hold 2 hours at heat, then cool rapidly.

The first solution treatment method results in increased rupture strength after aging, while the second results in better ductility and higher hardness.

    Aging

Heat to 1300/1400°F (704/760°C), hold 12 to 16 hours at heat, then air cool. Hardness is approximately 300 BHN.

A two cycle precipitation hardening treatment is occasionally specified after solution treatment at 1650°F (899°C). This treatment of 1300/1400°F (704/760°C), hold at heat for 16 hours, then air cool plus 1200°F (649°C), hold at heat for 8 to 12 hours, then air cool is intended to improve notch rupture strength while gaining the ductility and hardness advantages of a 1650°F (899°C) solution treatment.
